Nepal has more “digital agencies” than it has clients who actually know what a creative agency does. Most are one person with a Canva subscription and a name like “Studio Something.” A few are legitimate. Almost none tell you the difference.
If you’re a business owner trying to hire one, here’s what actually matters, in the order it matters.
Ask to see the strategy, not just the visuals
Anyone can show you a nice logo. Ask the agency why they made it that way. What’s the reasoning behind the color, the shape, the tone of voice. If the answer is “we felt it looked good,” that’s a designer, not an agency. A real creative partner can explain how the brand connects to your business goals, your customer, and your competition. If they can’t explain it, they didn’t think about it.
Check if they understand your industry, or just design in general
A dairy brand and a fintech startup do not need the same visual language, the same website structure, or the same tone. Ask for examples of work in adjacent industries, not just a general portfolio. If every project in their portfolio looks the same regardless of the client, that’s a style being reused, not a strategy being built.
Ask what happens after launch
A lot of agencies in Nepal disappear the moment the website goes live or the logo file gets sent. Ask directly: who updates the site in six months. Who’s responsible if the SEO drops. Who do you call if something breaks. If the answer is vague, budget for the fact that you’ll be doing this yourself, or paying someone else to clean it up later.
Look at how they talk about pricing
Cheap agencies price by deliverable: a logo costs this much, a website costs that much. Agencies that actually think strategically price by problem: what does it cost to make your business easier to find, easier to trust, easier to buy from. Neither approach is automatically wrong, but know which one you’re paying for. A ten thousand rupee logo and a two hundred thousand rupee brand identity are not competing for the same job.
Read their own website like a client would
This sounds obvious, but skip it and you’ll regret it. If an agency’s own site is slow, generic, or full of stock photos and vague claims like “we deliver excellence,” that’s the ceiling of what they’ll deliver for you too. Agencies rarely do better work for a client than they do for themselves.
Ask who’s actually doing the work
Nepal’s creative industry runs on outsourcing. The person who pitches you may not be the person who designs, writes, or codes anything. That’s not automatically bad, but you should know who’s in the room. Ask directly who touches your project day to day.
None of this is about finding the most expensive option or the most followers on Instagram. It’s about finding people who can explain their decisions, who stick around after the invoice is paid, and whose own work proves they can do what they’re claiming to sell you.Find us at cosignstudio.com
